Comedy at DEMBE Theatre

Comedy works better in a small room, and that is the whole case for seeing it here. A touring comedian who has spent the week playing fifteen-hundred-seat arts centres will tell you that the laugh in a room this size arrives faster and lands harder, because everybody can hear everybody else. If you want to see a name you recognise from television from close enough to catch the aside they did not plan, this is the page to watch.

What sort of comedy comes to Tring?

Mostly touring stand-up. Comedians building or previewing a show take it round regional theatres for months at a time, and a venue like this is a natural stop: close enough to London to be an easy journey, small enough that the material gets a proper test. You will find established circuit acts, performers who have become familiar from panel shows and podcasts, and occasionally someone trying out an hour weeks before they take it to Edinburgh.

Alongside the single-act shows there are mixed bills and comedy nights with several performers and a compere, which are a good introduction if you are not sure whose humour you will take to. Some comedy here overlaps with our An Evening With listings, where the format leans more towards conversation and anecdote than a written set.

Is it suitable for everyone?

Not always, and we would rather say so plainly. Stand-up is an adult form more often than not. Language, subject matter and audience interaction vary enormously from one act to the next, and a show that is perfectly judged for a Friday night crowd may be entirely wrong for a fourteen-year-old. Age guidance and content warnings are published on each event page, and where a promoter sets a minimum age we enforce it.

Front-row seats at a comedy show carry a well-known occupational hazard. Many comedians talk to the audience, and the people they talk to are usually the ones they can see. If that is not for you, book a few rows back. If it is exactly what you came for, book the front and take your chances.

Why a small theatre suits it

There is no distance here between the performer and the room. Nobody is watching on a screen, nobody is behind a pillar, and an act can work the whole audience rather than the first ten rows. That intimacy is the thing comedians mention when they come back, and it is why a good number of them do come back.

It also makes for a better evening out. The bar is open before the show and at the interval, the walk from your seat to it is short, and the room empties into the car park quickly afterwards. Running times for comedy are usually around two hours including an interval, and are published on each event page, so an evening here finishes in good time for the last train.

Comedy and the theatre's wider purpose

Professional comedy matters to us for a reason beyond the laughs. The theatre vision commits us to becoming sustainable: moving away from depending on one person's generosity to fund the building, towards a model that stands on its own. Professional promoted shows, comedy among the most reliable of them, are part of how that works. The income from a well-sold comedy night is what allows the same stage to be let at a subsidised rate to a youth group or a local charity the following week.

So a comedy ticket does two jobs. It buys you an evening, and it quietly supports the community programme that runs alongside it. Every ticket also includes a DEMBE Theatre Restoration Fee, which goes straight back into the fabric of the building.

Booking, access and finding us

Tickets are sold through this website, with each show on its own page showing dates, prices and the seating plan. Comedy tends to go on sale a long way out and sell steadily, so early booking gets the better seats. Concessions apply to some but not all comedy performances, since many are promoted shows with terms set by the promoter; the event page is definitive.

We are at Penny Royal Court, Station Road, Tring, HP23 5QY. Parking is free, the bus stops outside on Station Road, and Tring station is a short walk, roughly thirty-five minutes from London Euston. Wheelchair spaces are available in the auditorium, and if you have an access requirement of any kind please contact us before booking so we can get it right.

On sale now, and previously
